fun picture of Brock with paper hat
Brock wearing his Mailman hat

The picture above isn’t that great, but the other day Brock was wearing this cool ‘Mailman’ hat that he had made during one of his K4 lessons. Sort of a band of paper with a quirky fold in the front. I thought I would also share a couple of stories. The other night I was reading the book ‘The Black Stallion’ to the younger kids. The book was talking about the horse being in the winner’s circle and all sorts of flash bulbs going off. I spent a couple of minutes reminiscing about the cameras when I was a kid where you had to buy flash bulbs that mounted on the camera and burned out when you took the picture. I remember going to camp but not having any bulbs and trying to take pictures at the same time as my cousin did so there would be enough light. Didn’t work. What a waste those were.

And the story about Brock: he had been sick, but also generally has been not sleeping well at night. To avoid a repeat of the night before last (when he peed our bed), I had a mat beside his bed to lie down on. When he wandered in to our room in the middle of the night again, I ushered him to the bathroom and then back to his bed and laid down beside him. A while later, “Dad, can you get me a drink of water”. Dad: “oh, my legs are sleeping and I can’t move them”. Brock: “Move your legs and go get me a drink.” Dad moves his legs and gets Brock a half glass of water. Brock upon receiving said glass, “Is there ice in my water?”. Dad: “No”. Brock: “I want ice in my water.” Didn’t happen, apparently my legs were asleep again.

In the Dog Show Redux post, I reference some of the odd pictures that showed up on my camera, in particular those of Davison’s feet. Aunt Marta commented that she was hoping to see some of said pictures, so without any further ado, may we present “The feet of Davison”…

I only have a couple of minutes to post before getting the little ones to bed, so I thought rather than blathering on about some remembered story, I would post some additional pictures of Heidi from the Redwoods trip…

I have a couple of other pics of Heidi as well, but am having problems with the memory allocation with the hosting company (1and1.com), so the upload keeps crashing.

On our trip to the Redwoods back in 2004, the only large community in California that we visited was Crescent City.  Here’s a picture of Layne lugging Mikaela around at the playground we visited.

The one lingering memory that I have of Crescent City was how grimy it was, with lots of garbage around.  It was definitely a change from the Oregon communities that we were vacationing in.

And since you are wondering where the real scenery pictures are (since I took so many of them), here’s another one…

Road meets Redwood

I’m lagging behind on my “redwoods trip posts” – as I was trying to troubleshoot something on the new theme, and we had a pretty busy weekend.  Sorry for the delay, all of you readers out there (about 3 as far as I can tell).

IIRC (standing for “If I Recall Correctly” – a phrase that I will probably be using more and more during the years remaining to me, as my brain cells die off or just turn off), I had purchased a new camera shortly before this particular vacation trip.  It was a Konica Minolta 4 MP camera, with 16x optical zoom, and some video capability as well.  I really liked my camera and took a lot of pictures on this particular redwood trip (ooh – look – there’s another redwood tree – I’d better stop and get a picture of it), while other family members grew rather jaded to the joys of picture taking.

look - another redwood tree - this one with a twisting bark pattern, gotta get a picture

So, I have quite a lot of pictures from the trip – a certain number of which I am going to post over the next few days.  I’ll try and keep it interesting.

And that’s it for today, as it is suppertime.

We had lunch in northern California – I believe this was just on the outskirts of Crescent City (more on that later).  Sadly, this was the last time that we ever saw our large green lunchbag – shown being bumped off the bench by Daelynn.  Lori still rues the losing of it, as it was really handy.

I should probably make up some tag to include with each Rett picture where he is making faces.  Let me know if you come up with any good ideas for it.

A couple of hours into the 2004 trip to the redwoods, we stopped at a park (the voice in my head is telling me it was something like “Humbug Mountain State Park”, but that could be not quite right).  I think we stopped for lunch and a bathroom break, and to wade in the stream.

Here is a picture of Dad and Heidi-girl…

One of my purposes for the hubcrate.com site is sharing family photos.  The majority of photos that have been taken were around special family events, and most of those seem to be when we are on vacation.  Possibly that is when Dad is out of his everyday routine, and more in picture-taking mode.

The next series of photos that I’ll post are dated September 2004, and were taken during a day trip down the Oregon coast into the California redwoods.  To kick things off, here’s a picture of the kids (less Heidi who was a young toddler at the time).  True to form, Rett can’t keep a straight face while there is a photo-op going on.

Hurrah for Aunt Marta, as she has provided a whole bunch of additional pictures from the Dunebuggy day back in September 2004, including a couple of them with me in it (that’s not so much the hurrah part – as seeing some pics of it that I haven’t seen before).  So, here they are, along with a couple of interspersed remembrances.

Driving Lesson...

I had noticed this in one of the pictures earlier, but it wasn’t as obvious as it is in this one.  Danaya was a little too short to reach the gas and brake pedals, so the people who rented us the dune buggy also provided a thick piece of foam, which Danaya had behind her back.  This allowed her to operate the dune buggy reasonably comfortably.

From the parking lot, there was a sanded ramp up to the dunes (and on the way back, down from the sand dunes).  On the first run that Danaya and I did (I think the runs out onto the dunes and all the way to the beach probably lasted about 30 minutes or so), we were on our way back.  At the bottom of the ramp is a stop sign, where the ramp intersects with the road leading to the parking lot.   I was in the lead, and obediently stopped.  Danaya zoomed right by me out into the parking lot, being blissfully unaware of the stop sign.  Thankfully there wasn’t any traffic going by at the same time.

Other recollections?  It was a really fun day.

I think we’ve covered everyone who was driving dune buggies on said September day in 2004 (except for Ben, who surprisingly enough did not take any pictures of himself).  Here’s a picture of the youngest person there to don a helmet, Mikaela, who was having problems seeing out of the helmet, let alone over the dashboard.

I do have one more picture of Danaya that I want to post along with a couple of stories, but I’ll leave that one for tomorrow.
